2023 Professional Governance Act Transition Town Hall Recap

May 3, 2023

The AIBC’s Professional Governance Act Transition Town Hall took place on Thursday, April 27. The AIBC was delighted to have more than 150 Registrants attend the event.

The Town Hall began with AIBC Council President Stuart Rothnie providing an overview of the transition and new regulatory authority, including the PGA, Regulations, AIBC Bylaws and Schedules.

The rest of the presentation focused around discussing “What’s Essentially Stayed the Same?” as well as “What’s Changed?”. Thomas Lutes, General Counsel & Deputy CEO, began with speaking to the elements of the transition that remained unchanged, such as the AIBC’s mandate, titles & designations, and registration pathways. The presentation then shifted to areas of regulation and practice that had changed as a result of the transition – such as Bylaws and Professional Standards. Maura Gatensby Architect AIBC, Lead Practice Advisor and Regulatory Liaison, continued this discussion, covering Reserved Practice, the expanded definition of Good Standing, terminology, and more.

Following the presentation, both pre-submitted and live questions were answered by the presenters and AIBC staff. Some examples of questions addressed included:

  • What is the Office of the Superintendent of Professional Governance?
  • Will the Oral Examination include detailed questions about the PGA, or the new Regulations?
  • What happens if I have an open and ongoing application that was submitted prior to February 10?
  • How has the disciplinary process been modernized?

The event concluded after all questions were answered, and attendees were encouraged to submit any further inquiries to pga@aibc.ca.

As mentioned at the Town Hall, the event was recorded to enable attendees to re-watch the session, and also for those who were unable to attend. A recording of the presentation portion of the Town Hall and presentation deck are now available on the AIBC website, and will be for the next six months. Please note that viewing the recording of the Town Hall is not eligible for Learning Units.

Want to Ask Another Question about the AIBC’s Transition to the PGA?

As a reminder, Registrants are encouraged to send any questions about the AIBC’s transition to the PGA to pga@aibc.ca. The AIBC is available to assist Registrants and the public navigate the new requirements and standards.

The AIBC would also like to thank the many volunteers who greatly contributed to PGA transition. The Town Hall provided an overview of the multi-year transition, and it is important to note that many volunteers played a significant role throughout the entire process, by contributing their expertise, time, and knowledge.
