There are still two sessions remaining for the AIBC’s Summer Professional Development Series! This is a convenient and efficient way to earn Core Learning Units before the CES deadline of June 30, 2024. By attending the “Moving Toward Reconciliation: Learnings from Working Alongside Indigenous Communities” session, CES Participants can satisfy the AIBC’s Indigenous Peoples Learning requirement, which is in effect this reporting period.
A summary of each session can be found below. Additional information about the sessions, including speaker bios, can be found on the PD Opportunities webpage.
MOVING TOWARD RECONCILIATION: LEARNINGS FROM WORKING ALONGSIDE INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES
This session is eligible for credit towards the AIBC’s Indigenous Peoples Learning requirement.
This session will start with the history of Canada and its treatment of Indigenous communities. It will introduce the following documents and explore the important role and guidance each can offer in the practice of architecture: The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada; United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples; and British Columbia Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
B.C. is unique in Canada in that there were few historic treaties signed between Canada and the Indigenous communities of these lands. This gap can create uncertainty in land title, the authority of the communities, and application of regulatory rules. This session will also consider what this context means for how we use language, and the need to move away from colonial terms and thinking.
And finally, architectural projects within or for Indigenous communities create valuable opportunities for collaboration, co-design, and capacity building. Through a selection of projects, the presenters will speak to these opportunities, including: the impact of active engagement with the communities during the design process; the utilization of local resources and materials in the making of the building; and employment and training opportunities for the community members during construction.

CLEARING THE AIR: RADON FUNDAMENTALS FOR ARCHITECTS
Architects play a pivotal role in designing safe indoor environments. This presentation will discuss radon testing, understanding when and where to test for radon, and different testing methods and interpretation of results. Mitigation strategies will also be discussed including assessing effective ways to reduce radon levels and the key components for successful mitigation. The session will end with radon rough-in considerations, their most common issues, and how to incorporate strategies to design effective and operable systems. Architects play an important role in reducing the risk of radon intrusion in our buildings. Attendees will learn about radon and methods to create healthier spaces.
