Introduction to Digital Seals
As organizations move from paper to electronic filing, one of the key challenges in this digital transformation is the authentication of these files. This presentation will introduce AIBC’s Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, Professional Standard 8 (8.1 – 8.6). Attendees will also be introduced to the requirements under the Electronic Transactions Act of B.C., which underpins the use of professional digital seals in the province. The key ingredients of electronic document reliability, the different types of e-signature solutions available and the varying levels of reliability of each will be discussed.
Attendees will also be presented with an in-depth demo on how to use the seal.

Presenters: Robin Urquhart and Rodrigo Mora P.Eng., PhD
Robin Urquhart is a Senior Project Consultant at RDH Building Science. He wrote the Framework for Radon Management in Yukon (2018) and has worked as the enclosure radon specialist on a variety of large and small projects. Robin is especially focused on the intersection of multidisciplinary design teams with respect to radon control in buildings outside Part 9 of the BC Building Code.
Rodrigo Mora is a Faculty of Building Environmental Systems at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). His work focuses on the monitoring and modeling of built environments and environmental systems for human-environmental health and resilience. Rodrigo’s work has focused exclusively on indoor environments; however, realizing that buildings are designed with little connection to the actual site and surroundings, and vice versa, urban environments are environmentally disconnected from buildings, Rodrigo began to investigate connected building-urban environmental systems that are synergistic, responsive to the needs of people, and in harmony with the environment, while being robust to deviations from design, and resilient to the extreme environmental threats of climate change.

Moving Toward Reconciliation: Learnings from Working Alongside Indigenous Communities
This session will start with the history of Canada and its treatment of Indigenous communities. It will introduce the following key documents and explore the important role and guidance each can offer in the practice of architecture: The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada; United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples; and British Columbia Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
B.C. is unique in Canada in that there were few historic treaties signed between Canada and the Indigenous communities of these lands. This gap can create uncertainty in land title, the authority of the communities, and application of regulatory rules. This session will also consider what this context means for how we use language, and the need to move away from colonial terms and thinking.
And finally, architectural projects within or for Indigenous communities create valuable opportunities for collaboration, co-design, and capacity building. Through a selection of projects, the presenters will speak to these opportunities, including: the impact of active engagement with the communities during the design process; the utilization of local resources and materials in the making of the building; and employment and training opportunities for the community members during construction.

Presenters: Scott Kemp Architect AIBC and Aiden Callison Architect AIBC
Scott Kemp has had the honour and privilege of working with Indigenous communities throughout BC for the past 20 years. During that time, the communities have shared their stories and traditions. A way of working has been developed that is a collaboration between all parties that maximizes the benefits to the communities. The communities participate in the design and creation of the buildings. It is less about the final building but the building of the building that is important.
Aiden Callison is an Indigenous architect and a member of the Hwlitsum First Nation (the people of Canoe Pass). Aiden brings his lived experience to his architectural practice. The impact of colonialism has meant his family experienced generations of removal from their cultural heritage, which drives him to continue to ask what role architecture can play in decolonization and fostering better relationships with First Peoples. As an Associate Principal at HCMA Aiden leads a team focused on working alongside Indigenous Communities and on work that advances reconciliation.

Clearing the Air: Radon Fundamentals for Architects
Architects play a pivotal role in designing safe indoor environments. This presentation will discuss radon testing, understanding when and where to test for radon, and different testing methods and interpretation of results. Mitigation strategies will also be discussed including assessing effective ways to reduce radon levels and the key components for successful mitigation. The session will end with radon rough-in considerations, their most common issues, and how to incorporate strategies to design effective and operable systems. Architects play an important role in reducing the risk of radon intrusion in our buildings. Attendees will learn about radon and methods to create healthier spaces.

2024 Certified Professional Course
The 2024 Certified Professional (CP) Course will be based on the new 2023 BC Building Code, which is expected to be implemented in December 2023, and the 2019 Vancouver Building By-law. Please note that for 2024, the CP Course will be conducted online, with the CP Exams taking place in-person.
Potential participants are encouraged to explore the possibility of partial grant funding for the courses, through the WorkBC BC Employer Training Grant. To learn more, visit the Government of BC’s Workforce Training Stream webpage.
Certified Professional Program Overview
The CP Program is an alternative to the conventional building permit and inspection process adopted by Vancouver, Surrey, Abbotsford, West Vancouver, University Endowment Lands, District of Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh Nation, and Squamish Nation (Senakw). Through the program, participating Authorities Having Jurisdiction can issue a building permit on the assurances of a CP, who also must be a registered professional (such as a professional engineer or architect).
Although anyone may take the CP Course, only architects and professional engineers may practice as CPs. Intern Architects AIBC and engineers-in-training who meet all CP Course requirements and pass the CP Exams will be able to practice as CPs when they become registered as architects or professional engineers.
2024 Certified Professional Course Schedule
The CP Course schedule consists of 12 full-day sessions on Wednesdays from January 10 to April 10, 2024. There are no classes on February 28 or March 20, 2024. There is one half-day tutorial on April 17, 2024. The CP Course concludes with 2 full-day exams May 1 and May 8, 2024. The exams will be conducted in-person and in a manner that follows government guidance on health and safety.
The cost of the CP Course is $5,700+GST.
Registration for the CP Course closes on December 15, 2023 (or when capacity is reached).
Cancellations/Reschedule Policy
No refunds will be issued for a withdrawal within 30 days of the course date. If a request is received to withdraw from a course more than 30 days before the course date, refunds will be subject to a $60 administration fee plus applicable taxes. Transferring between courses is not permitted. Full refunds (i.e., not subject to an administrative fee) will only be given in case of emergencies, at the AIBC’s entire discretion.
Attendance Policy
Each candidate must have a minimum of 80% live attendance prior to the sitting for the CP Exams. Candidates with less than 80% live attendance will not be allowed to write the CP Exam and will fail to complete this Certified Professional Course. Viewing a course recording in place of attending a course day, or a portion of a course day, live, will be considered as not having attended.
This is an AIBC-Delivered event. Learning Units (LUs) will be adjusted to reflect the actual time attended for the course. LUs are only recorded for CES Participants who have registered and paid for the event. No self-reports are accepted from individuals who have not registered and paid.
