AIBC Courses FAQ

Have a question about AIBC Courses or the redesign transition? Review our list of Frequently Asked Questions which covers everything from the difference between the old (prior to 2019) and current course track, to requirements and next steps.

To learn more about AIBC Courses and the redesign, visit the Ongoing Courses webpage.

General

How can I view the courses I have completed to date?

Intern Architects AIBC can log into their online AIBC account to view a history of completed courses. This is also recorded in the periodic assessment form provided with approved CERBs. Please note that if you received credit for completing the BCIT 1830 course or 4500 courses, this will be reflected in your periodic assessment form only; it will not be reflected in the online portal.

BEA candidates are asked to email professionaldevelopment@aibc.ca.

What’s the difference between the old (prior to 2019) and redesigned course track?

Redesigned courses have a new structure, learning outcomes, and updated content. Moreover, content from the elective courses have been integrated into the four redesigned courses.

In addition, the instruction delivery for the redesigned courses has been substantially changed. The redesigned courses are interactive with learner participation integrated into activities, which aim to increase retention and application of such knowledge beyond the “classroom.”

Do I need to complete the mandatory courses before I write the ExAC?

No, the mandatory courses only need to be completed prior to taking the Oral Review.

COVID-19 Note: In response to COVID-19, there has been a temporary relaxation to the mandatory registration requirements. Please refer to the website for more information.

Course Equivalency

How are substitute courses offered by a provider other than the AIBC determined to be equivalent
to AIBC courses?

The AIBC conducts a thorough review of externally-offered courses in order to determine if they are equivalent to AIBC courses – this includes a detailed assessment of learning outcomes and course content.

How can I find out if an external course is equivalent to a specific AIBC course?

If there is an external course that has been deemed equivalent, it will be listed under the specific AIBC course on the Courses webpage, under the heading “Equivalency”.

I have completed a course, Project Management for Architects, offered by RAIC. Will this be
equivalent to AIBC’s Management of the Project course?

Yes. RAIC’s 41-hour course, Project Management for Architects, is equivalent to AIBC’s Management of the Project course. To be clear, this 41-hour course consists of 35 hours of instruction plus a 6-hour practical workshop.

Situational

I have completed all of the mandatory courses under the old (prior to 2019) course offerings, do I
need to re-take any courses prior to the Oral Review?

Yes. You will be required to re-take the four redesigned courses; Architect & the Law, BC Building Code, Construction Administration, and Ethics, Act & Bylaws.

COVID-19 Note: In response to COVID-19, there has been a temporary relaxation to the mandatory registration requirements. Please refer to the website for more information.

In 2018, I completed Law & the Architect and Ethics, Act & Bylaws. In 2019, I completed the
redesigned BC Building Code and Construction Administration courses. Will I have to retake any courses?

Yes. As the Law & the Architect and Ethics, Act & Bylaws courses were taken prior to the redesign, they will need to be taken in the updated format.

I have already completed the non-mandatory version of Construction Administration prior to 2019
– do I need to retake it?

Yes. The redesigned version of Construction Administration is a new course which has been completely overhauled – it features an improved structure, new learning outcomes, and updated content.

I noticed that elective courses are no longer offered per the updated course requirements, but I
have already completed two elective courses – Management of the Project and BC Building Code II. What additional courses do I need to take?

Given that you have completed two elective courses, you will need to take the four redesigned mandatory courses. In total, you will have completed six courses.

If I resign or am removed from the AIBC Register but have already completed some of the old (prior to 2019) courses, will they still count towards completion of the Internship in Architecture Program (IAP)
should I reinstate?

No. You will be required to (re)take the four redesigned courses; Architect & the Law, BC Building Code, Construction Administration, and Ethics, Act and Bylaws.
