Internship in Architecture Program

Once students have successfully completed their professional degree in architecture, they begin their internship. The Internship in Architecture Program (IAP) is a national program that provides a pathway for intern architects to become registered as Architects AIBC.

The IAP process involves mentorship, work experience, professional development and oral reviews. Intern architects are recognized and registered by the AIBC as associates and permitted to exclusively use the designation of “Intern Architect AIBC”.

In British Columbia, there are several specific provincial requirements. Please see Appendix B: Specific Regulatory Organizations of Architecture in Canada (ROAC) Requirements (PDF).

For further details, please refer to:

  • Roadmap to Registration via IAP (PDF)
  • The Regulatory Organizations of Architecture in Canada’s Internship in Architecture Program Manual – Fourth Edition (PDF)
  • Appendix B: Specific Regulatory Organizations of Architecture in Canada (ROAC) Requirements (PDF)

Apply to the IAP

Follow these steps to apply to the Internship in Architecture Program:

Obtain your CACB academic certification

Certification by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB) confirms that your academic qualifications comply with the Canadian Education Standard in Architecture for entry to the profession.

Certification is issued automatically if you have graduated from a CACB-accredited professional degree program in Canada. You will need to apply for CACB certification for all other programs, including NAAB-accredited university programs of architecture in the United States and the RAIC Syllabus Program in Canada. Degrees from outside of Canada or the U.S. may also be eligible for CACB certification.

Provisional CACB certificates are also accepted for application to the Internship in Architecture Program. Once you have fulfilled the requirements set by the CACB to obtain your final CACB certificate, you will be required to submit this to the AIBC.

Questions relating to the accreditation of education and certificate requirements should be directed to the CACB. Visit the CACB website at www.cacb.ca to learn more.

Find a mentor

Your IAP application requires you to identify a mentor who has agreed to act as an independent guide/advocate for you. Your mentor must be an Architect AIBC or a Retired Architect AIBC who is not employed at your own place of employment (if you are employed).

For more information, see Supervising Architect and Mentor Guidelines (PDF).  If you have difficulty finding a mentor, please contact iap@aibc.ca for a list of volunteer mentors.

Prepare your application package

Your completed application package must include the following:

  • Application form: Internship in Architecture Program (PDF)
  • Photograph Identification form (PDF)
  • Copy of undergraduate/architecture diploma(s) or syllabus of studies diploma;

  • Copy of CACB certification (letter and/or certificate);
  • Confirmation of Employment letter (PDF), signed by your supervising architect, if employed. You do not have to be employed to apply to the IAP. If not employed at this time, skip this step.
  • Supervising Architect Undertaking (PDF), signed by your supervising architect, if employed. You do not have to be employed to apply to the IAP. If not employed at this time, skip this step.
