AIBC Vancouver Island Chapter – Integration of Security and Life Safety

There is a common misconception that security and safety conflict when applied to the built environment. After all, security conditions can impose limits on people movement that may be in conflict with planned evacuation paths to conform to applicable Codes or hardware that is prescribed for security may be in conflict with egress requirements. But, numerous projects have shown that security and safety can be integrated and can be compatible when the two disciplines are both at the table early in the design stage. This presentation will outline basic security principles and the collaboration that is needed at that early project stage to achieve security objectives and meet applicable fire and life safety Codes.
