EGBC – Integrating Vehicle and Transit Automation for Long-range Mobility Planning and Design

The autonomous vehicle (AV) has witnessed a tremendous explosion of interest in the last few years. Little, however, is known about how and what it can do for long-range urban mobility planning and design. The technology’s maturity and its impact on a city’s system-wide mobility changes remain unknown. The course will cover the evolution of past automation, providing a clue for the road to the future. Internal mechanisms with levels of automation technology for vehicles and transit will be explained from the perception, planning, and control layers that determine the autonomy of vehicle movement. The reality of zero crashes will be explained in depth, with a deeper look into the seven layers of the decision-making process. Using the demand control concept through the limits of mobility boundaries, sensible and limited planning changes and debates on when and what to do can be resolved through the simple comparison of typical planning processes and timelines. Capacity changes, affordability, and realistic numbers of people carried by automated mobility modes will be explored to provide a more practical and realistic path to the long-term, gradual changes needed to respond to mobility automation. Despite being projected to reclaim 90% of the land after the autonomous vehicle’s arrival, very little process is known to practitioners. Actual redesign changes, strategies, and the derailing potential of geometric, traffic, and associated goods movement strategies, framework, and design changes will be explored to develop a logical guide with practical implementation procedures for slow and gradual changes in the physical infrastructures of our urban multimodal (auto)mobility ecosystems.
