Fall PD Series | Community Engagement in Design: Architecture for Indigenous Youth

October 5, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

How can architects meaningfully engage communities in design? And can architecture address Indigenous peoples’ rights to share their culture, ecological wisdom, and connections to the land across generations? In this session, we will look at children/youth centres designed for, and in concert with, Indigenous communities, including the recently completed Tsawwassen First Nation Youth Centre. In all cases, the architecture evolved by listening to the voices of peoples whose cultures have been historically marginalized. Feedback from community stakeholders suggests that the centres are helping young people reach their goals as future leaders, through the opportunities provided as well as the ancestral knowledge embedded in the architecture.

Presenter: Nancy Mackin Architect AIBC, AIA, LEED AP
Dr. Nancy Mackin has presented her architectural work in Norway, Denmark, Iceland, New Zealand, Finland, Italy, Australia, Portugal, USA, and across Canada from the Arctic Ocean to the Atlantic Seaboard to the West Coast. In each place, she exchanged architectural wisdom with Indigenous and long-resident peoples, with a commitment to community-based design and telling peoples’ true history through architecture. Recent awards include Architectural Foundation of BC Award of Excellence “Equity” 2022, Wood Design and Building “Against the Grain” award 2022, and SAB Canada Green Building Award 2021.
