RAIC – AI and Intellectual Property: Navigating Copyright Risks in the Age of Generative AI

The growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in architectural practice presents significant opportunities, along with important intellectual property (IP) considerations. This session examines the evolving relationship between AI and IP law, focusing on the copyright risks posed by generative AI technologies. Participants will gain an understanding of how AI-generated designs, renderings, drawings, specifications, and other project materials may challenge traditional concepts of originality and authorship that underpin copyright protection. The session will also examine key questions surrounding ownership of copyright in works created with the assistance of AI, as well as potential copyright infringement risks associated with AI-generated outputs. Through practical examples and discussion of emerging legal developments, participants will learn about the IP risks associated with incorporating AI into their workflows. Takeaways will include strategies for protecting architectural designs and other proprietary assets, and reducing exposure to liability arising from the infringement of the IP rights of others.
