RAIC – Vancouver Island South Presents: Preserve (Protect) vs Progress (Manage Change): The Challenges in Urban Development Today
Communities across Canada have experienced significant change over the past 15 years, accompanied by increasing public scrutiny of development processes and the criteria used to achieve acceptable outcomes. For applicants, navigating the Planning processes including the Design Advisory Panels (ADPs) and Public Input can be complex and, at times, daunting.
This panel discussion will explore the respective roles of Planners, Developers and Architects through the permit process involving Advisory Design Panels and public input in balancing urban progress with urban protection. Panelists will bring different professional perspectives on how regulation, design review, legislation, public expectations, and development objectives influence the evolution of cities and neighbourhoods.
Rather than seeking consensus, the discussion will provide an opportunity to better understand the objectives, responsibilities, and challenges that different professionals bring to the development process. Through dialogue and contrasting perspectives, the session will examine how current regulatory and review processes can support—or challenge—the balance between maintaining valued aspects of our existing communities and responding to opportunities for growth, change, and progress.
The discussion will encourage participants to consider how process, professional judgment, public expectations, and regulation interact in shaping development outcomes.
