Until recently, actually designing and building sustainable buildings has been mostly a voluntary effort, dependent on client interest in pursuing the latest labeling system. British Columbia, the City of Vancouver and the City of Toronto are now bringing out the “sticks” of regulation, including energy performance targets that specifically address the energy demands as well as energy consumption of buildings. In this presentation, Steve Kemp and Marine Sanchez will look at primarily non-Part 9 buildings and the design direction they have used to achieve low energy targets, from highly insulated enclosures, to highly tweaked HVAC kit, and back again to enclosures that enable high-performance HVAC.
