This course is the executive summary of the Building Envelope Education Program (BEEP) modules and satisfies the recommendations of AIBC Bulletin 68: Building Envelope (PDF). It is relevant for a principal of an architectural firm, an intern architect, architectural technologist, building official, someone who retains Building Envelope consultants as well as someone who will benefit from a clear understanding and awareness of the field.

At this course, you will learn how the bylaws are interpreted and how to educate clients, sub-consultants, and the public about compliance with them; discuss the societal context of codes of ethics and rules of professional conduct; and canvass the statutory and regulatory context of related practice requirements such as Letters of Assurance and the sealing of documents.

This course focuses on legal principles and applications relevant to the practice of architecture, to raise awareness and guide decisions. Topics include contracts; negligence; employment standards; bidding and contract award; builders’ liens; environmental aspects; and dispute resolution.

At this course, you will receive up-to-date information regarding your responsibilities as an architect with respect to: construction contracts and contract documents; including obligations under CCDC 2 (1994), CCAC 6 (1997) and the BC Government Stipulated Price Construction Contract. You will be apprised of the principles of architectural specifications and the significance of their contribution to the contract documents and learn about the implications of various project delivery methods, including “design/build.

Delivering a project professionally, on time and on budget are important skills in the practice of architecture. Two successful architectural firms will share their techniques for effectively managing projects. You will examine the process from the client agreement phase, through the design stage, to project closeout from the perspectives of both small and large firms.
