Building a Practice: Let’s Get Creative

Making the leap to your own practice requires many different skills that you may not have had the chance to hone in your career. Some of these will be expected, but a good many more can catch you off guard. In this presentation, you will learn from different practitioners on what their transition was like, and the lessons that they learned along the way. Featured speakers include a principal from an emerging, unique practice, a sole practitioner and the head of a firm that has expanded and is now at a boutique studio level.

About the Presenters
Jenny Chow Architect AIBC is an active member of the Intern Architect Committee as the Registered Architect advisor. She holds several academic credentials including a Masters in Architecture and a Bachelor in Environmental Design Studies from Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS and a Diploma in Architectural Engineering and Technology from BCIT. Jenny has gained considerable international work experience over the course of her career in countries including Germany, Ireland, Austria and USA. Locally, she has worked with the firms of Dialog and Gair Williamson Architects. Her work includes the design and construction of the highly acclaimed Alessi Flagship store in New York City, the winning design of the China Insurance Group Tower in Shenzhen, China, the Paris Block/Annex in Vancouver and the internationally renowned Vancouver House. Jenny is currently a part of the Store Design team at Aritzia, an innovative design house and fashion boutique.
Greg Damant Architect AIBC, LEED AP is registered architect, a LEED accredited professional, and a Principal with Cascadia Architects Incorporated. Born in South Africa and raised in Victoria, Greg received his architectural degree from Carleton University in Ottawa and trained with firms in Vancouver and Victoria, where he was Senior Associate with D’Ambrosio architecture + urbanism until he founded Cascadia Architects with Peter Johannknecht in 2012. Greg brings a holistic interest in design and construction to the practice of architecture, combining attention to urban-design, environmental sustainability and the craft of material and connection detailing. He designed the Bernhardt Passive House in Saanich –the first home on Vancouver Island to be certified under the International Passive House standard for energy efficiency.
Until January 2015 Bruce Haden Architect AIBC, OAA, MRAIC, LEED AP was a Principal at DIALOG, one of Canada’s largest integrated design practices, including architecture, engineering, interior design and planning. He is now principal at Bruce Haden Architect Ltd. Bruce is passionate about human engagement as a central objective of design, both for fostering creative entrepreneurialism and for social health. Bruce is also working on a book on an inhabitation based (as opposed to form based) approach to creating activated urban spaces: “Urban Magnets”. Bruce was a leader for DIALOG on multiple widely recognized projects, including the globally published and awarded Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre, the LEED Platinum targeted UBC Student Union Building (with B+H), and the Vancouver House tower (with the Bjarke Ingels Group).
Peeroj Thakre Architect AIBC, LEED AP BD+C is a registered architect in British Columbia and received a Masters of Architecture from the University of British Columbia and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Economics from McGill University. She started out working primarily on public projects, but since founding ph5 and Urban Republic, she has added temporary urban installations, commercial and residential projects to her portfolio. She is committed to clear communication and consensus-building with project stakeholders. Her design approach is a blend of pragmatism and idealism that leads to successfully realized projects and enhanced spatial and social interactions and environments. Peeroj is active in the architecture community, as a guest critic at UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, mentor and urban thinker. Her work has been recognized with an RAIC advocacy award.
