The AIBC invites you to attend the 2016 Annual Conference – Building A Resilient Future. The conference will be held from May 16-18, 2016 at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

About the Conference
The 2016 AIBC Annual Conference brings together the architectural and design community to learn about the latest issues and developments in the practice of architecture, including new design trends, current technologies and best business practices.

This annual gathering is the largest of its kind in British Columbia and provides the opportunity for delegates to network, socialize and celebrate the work of practitioners and theorists. More importantly, the conference will be rich in professional development and provides the opportunity to collect learning units (LUs) before the end of the current two-year CES reporting period (July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2016).

Conference Theme
Resiliency is (literally and figuratively) in the air. Scientists and world leaders have identified a two-degree increase in global temperatures as an irreversible threshold. The UN has outlined 17 Sustainable Development Goals for solving the climate crisis and ensuring social stability. The UN’s Conference of Parties (COP21) is working to achieve consensus around reducing greenhouse gases. Even Pope Francis has issued an encyclical on the same topic with the subtitle of: “Care for Our Common Home”. Cities are taking matters into their own hands and implementing strategies to become more sustainable.

How does the architectural profession respond to these necessary adaptations? How does design become not only more resilient but also more proactive in addressing the imminent concerns of rising temperatures, severe weather patterns, and compromised resources?

Conference Program
The 2016 AIBC Annual Conference runs over three days and features a keynote presentation, plenary sessions, seminars, workshops, panel discussions and an industry exhibitor show. A keynote presentation from Dr. David Boyd kicks off this year’s annual conference.

Keynote Presentation: The Power of Optimism
May 16, 2016 – 7-9 p.m.

Dr. David R. Boyd, keynote presenter at the 2016 AIBC Annual ConferenceDr. David R. Boyd is one of Canada’s leading experts in environmental law and policy and an internationally renowned authority on the relationship between human rights and environmental degradation. He teaches at UBC and SFU and co-chairs Vancouver’s Greenest City 2020 and 100% Renewable City initiatives with Mayor Gregor Robertson. Boyd is also the award-winning author of over 100 articles and eight books including Cleaner, Greener, Healthier: A Prescription for Stronger Canadian Environmental Laws and Policies and The Optimistic Environmentalist: Progress Towards a Greener Future. He served as a special advisor on sustainability to Prime Minister Paul Martin and has also advised the government of Sweden on environmental policy.
