A reminder to all practitioners that centralized mail delivery is now part of all new residential and commercial developments in Canada. Planning for the right type of service from the many options available will ensure efficient postal service.
A Delivery Planning Standards Manual for Builders and Developers with diagrams and in depth guidance from Canada Post is available for download. Please keep this link handy as the manual may be updated at any time.
Community Mailboxes (CMB)
CMBs are provided and maintained by Canada Post. Only your Canada Post Delivery Service Officer (DSO) can approve CMB locations.
Single Family Homes (SFH)
All new SFHs built through rezoning or subdivision require mail delivery to a CMB.
Speak to your DSO to confirm if an existing or a new CMB will be required for your SFH development. Any new CMB Locations will be approved in consultation with you and the local municipality.
Townhouse Developments
All townhouse developments must receive mail to a CMB. Privately purchased mail panels will not be considered for these type of developments. Speak to your DSO early in the planning stage to review:
- Space Requirements
- Location
- Developer Responsibilities
- Timeline for Installation
Your DSO can help you select the appropriate sites for your development and provide complete plans and specifications.
Industrial and Business Parks or Ground Level Businesses/Retail Units
All industrial complexes without a common indoor area will require a CMB. If you have retail units at the base of a residential tower their mailboxes need to be placed inside the building or will be serviced by a CMB.
Landscaping, Structures and other Design Features
Providing interesting or appealing features around the CMB location is acceptable and encouraged. However, any such features cannot impede Canada Post’s ability to maintain, repair or replace the CMBs as required.
How do I contact my Canada Post Delivery Service Officer?
