Next Edition of the BC Building Codes

April 4, 2017

The next edition of the British Columbia Building, Plumbing, and Fire Codes (BC Codes) is scheduled for targeted consultation in 2017.  An appropriate transition period will apply before the next edition of the BC Codes comes into effect.  The 2012 BC Codes will continue to be in effect for building projects where permits were applied for before the effective date of the next edition of the BC Codes.

Preliminary review of the model 2015 National Building Codes, upon which the BC Codes will be substantially based, has revealed several areas of significant change.  Code users interested in familiarizing themselves with the potential effect of future changes may consider reviewing the 2015 National Building Codes available here:

http://www.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca/eng/publications/codes_centre/2015_national_building_code.html

Industry associations may also contemplate education and training opportunities for their members to become familiar with the new code provisions.

Two code changes are slated to be introduced preceding the release of the next edition:

  1. Update to the 2012 BC Codes to reference to NFPA-13R-2013 – Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems in Low-Rise Residential Occupancies.  This change means balcony sprinklers will be required for four storey wood frame buildings.  This update will be effective July 20, 2017.
  2. Proposed revisions for the introduction of an Energy Step Code that local governments may voluntarily adopt in their communities.  For information about the proposed Energy Step Code, please visit: http://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/industry/construction-industry/building-codes-standards/energy-efficiency/energy-step-code

Questions regarding the next edition of the BC Codes may be directed to building.safety@gov.bc.ca.
