Bulletin 68: Building Envelope (PDF) discusses fundamental responsibilities of architects for the design of the building envelope. The introduction of the BC Energy Step Code (April 2017) and the new building code energy conservation requirements triggered a review of the Bulletin and its subsequent council-approved update.
The updated Bulletin 68: Building Envelope (PDF) clarifies the architect’s role in the multifaceted design of the building envelope. It reminds architects and associates that the design and field review of building envelope are key aspects of core competence. Further, it emphasizes that all items under the architectural scope in the building codes’ letters of assurance are the responsibility of the architect and cannot be transferred or ignored. However, architects may obtain assistance from other architects and professional engineers in exercising this responsibility.
Intern Architects AIBC are now required to complete the building envelope course as a pre-condition to registration as an Architect AIBC. References to BEEP have been removed, with a list of available resources included.
