The most successful, sought after, and rewarded business developers are those who can capture the imagination, inspire dreams and collaborate with their clients and communities to achieve new and inspired outcomes through engaged conversations. In this session, attendees will learn the critical communication skills required to secure projects and maintain good relationships with clients, colleagues, staff, and external networks. The presenter will share their experience working with architectural firms and provide examples of communication skills that have helped firms achieve high levels of success, profitability, and client satisfaction.

Historic buildings and sites offer rich opportunities for communities to connect with the past while enriching the built environment. Retaining, rehabilitating and reusing existing structures offers cultural, social, environmental and economic benefits and can contribute greatly to a sustainable and vibrant future. However, projects involving heritage places come with their own challenges and demand specific approaches and often innovative, creative responses. In this session led by Vancouver Heritage Foundation, several significant, recently completed projects will be presented and discussed by the professionals involved to share specific challenges and solutions, as well as illuminate heritage conservation principles in practice. Projects covered during the session include the seismic upgrading of Lord Strathcona Elementary School, the Burrard Bridge rehabilitation, and the adaptive re-use of Taylor Manor for supporting housing.

The Asian community is a huge influence in the real estate and building markets, and with that, comes Feng Shui. Much of Feng Shui is misunderstood and misrepresented. Real Feng Shui is about understanding how energy works in the environment and connecting the building and design through a set of principles. All energy works in patterns, and by understanding these patterns with Feng Shui it is possible to design goal specific environments that support people and their specific desires. There is a saying in Feng Shui that 70% of the energy of any building is determined by location. Using the concepts of Qi and Yin and Yang, this session will focus on how location, direction, and the design of the built environment correlates and impacts the inhabitants of buildings. Real projects will be used to discuss Feng Shui from an architectural planning perspective.

The future has happened, but most designers and delivery teams are still using tools set decades ago. Even BIM has grown profoundly into Digital Twins and common data environments. This workshop will cover many of the new advancements within design technology and speak to the benefits of the advancements for practice. Cloud based collaboration and client commentary management will be additional features within the course to discuss the best practices for meaningful dialogue using simple technology. Attendees will gain knowledge to democratize seemingly complex technology and begin the road to structured data, allowing for architecture projects to be effectively communicated in a wide array of mediums.
