New this Year | Three Keynote Presentations

For the first-time, the AIBC is delighted to have three keynote presentations.

Ole Scheeren will kick-off the conference on Monday evening with Transformative Architecture. Questions like “How can we create buildings that meet the demands of our rapidly urbanizing cities yet foster a sense of community and create a meaningful connection with their surroundings?” and “How can we reconnect the scale of the high-rise with that of the human being and the surrounding cityscape?” will be explored. Ole Scheeren’s recent projects in North America – including two residential developments in downtown Vancouver – as well as other projects across Asia and Europe will be looked at to examine the role architecture can play in shaping the public realm and what the future of our cities could look like.

On Tuesday morning, Canada-Norway: Learning Locally, Learning Globally will take place. Conference delegates will have the opportunity to listen to an international panel of Norwegian and Canadian architects discuss common challenges and approaches in regard to timber, sustainability and climate change. The similar landscapes, natural resources and climate in both of these countries provide common ground to discuss these important topics and a platform to learn best practices from each other.

The conference concludes with a look towards the future of architecture with strategic foresight leader, Radha Mistry. Radha’s presentation will delve into the impact of emerging technologies and how they will change the way we design, as well as discuss how today’s architecture can reveal our visions for the future, address our deepest uncertainties and incite real change. Radha is passionate about how we might transform visions of the future into tangible outcomes that drive people to positive action.

Conference 2020: Forming the Future

The AIBC has been regulating the profession of architecture in B.C. since 1920. As we reflect upon the past ten decades of regulation, we see consistency, stability, and constancy – particularly in the commitment to regulate the profession in the public interest.

As we embark upon the next 100 years, the architectural profession in B.C. is poised to form and be formed by the local, national and global environment. Now more than ever, it is critical to keep current with technological and industrial innovation and be attentive to professional and societal expectations.

The AIBC invites you to explore the challenges and opportunities facing the profession of architecture, and discover the latest trends, solutions and ideas at the 2020 AIBC Conference.
