2021 Certified Professional and Advanced Code Knowledge Course Registration

August 28, 2020

The 2021 Certified Professional (CP) and Advanced Code Knowledge (ACK) Courses are now available for registration. The courses are jointly offered by Engineers and Geoscientists BC and the AIBC, and will be based on the 2018 BC Building Code and the 2019 Vancouver Building Bylaw.

This year, given the COVID-19 pandemic, all sessions will be delivered online via Zoom, and there will be no increase in fees for the CP Course.

Certified Professional Program Overview

The CP Program is an alternative to the conventional building permit and inspection process utilized by the City of Vancouver, the City of Surrey, the City of Abbotsford, as well as several other Authorities Having Jurisdiction. Through the program, participating municipalities can issue a building permit on the assurances of a recognized registered professional (engineer or architect)—the CP. The CP Course focuses on Part 3 and the relevant associated provisions of the BC Building Code and the Vancouver Building By-law, and on CP practice. The ACK covers all CP Course code content (except for High Buildings and CP practice), and does not require the completion of the CP Course projects, exams or site tours.

2021 Certified Professional Course Schedule

The CP Course schedule consists of 12 full-day sessions on Wednesdays from January 6, 2021 to March 31, 2021, with one half-day tutorial on April 14, 2021. There are no classes on February 24 and April 7, 2021. The CP Course concludes with 2 full-day exams – please note the CP Exams will be held in-person, and that all COVID-19 related health and safety protocols and BC Ministry of Health recommendations will be followed.

Registration for the CP Course closes on December 15, 2020. The course costs:

  •  $4,900 (until October 31, 2020)
  •  $5,300 (after November 1, 2020)

2021 Advanced Code Knowledge Course Schedule

The ACK Course schedule consists of seven full-day sessions on Wednesdays from January 6, 2021 to February 17, 2021.

Registration for the ACK Course closes on December 15, 2020. The course costs:

  •  $3,000 (until October 31, 2020)
  •  $3,300 (after November 1, 2020)

The BC Employer Training Grant may cover up to 60% of your costs; please note you’ll need to set up a BCeID to use the system.

Although anyone may take the CP Course, only architects and engineers may practice as CPs. Intern Architects AIBC and Engineers In Training (EIT) who meet all course requirements and pass the exams will be able to practice as CPs when they become B.C. registered architects or engineers.

For more information, or to register visit the AIBC website (select “2021” in the year drop down menu), or contact CP Program Manager Teresa Coady Architect AIBC, FRAIC, AIA, LEED Fellow, at tcoady@egbc.ca or 604.639.8185.
