The AIBC is delighted to announce that that new Oral Exam (formerly the Oral Review) has officially launched, with the upcoming October round being the first administered under the new and improved process.
The application period for the next Oral Exam opens on August 8 and will close on August 26. The exams will take place from October 3 to 31 and will be administered virtually. Those interested in taking the Oral Exam are still required to submit an application form between the specified registration period for each round.
New Oral Exam
The Oral Review Project explored administering the Oral Review online and in-person, as well as examined how to strengthen the principles of fairness, validity, and reliability, in both delivery methods. The AIBC has created a Oral Exam Candidate Guidebook (PDF) to help applicants become more familiar with the new Oral Exam.
Key changes to the new Oral Exam include:
- Name change from “Oral Review” to “Oral Exam”
- Better flow and sequence of questions following the design/build process
- Refinement of the answer rubrics
- More robust feedback for candidates to address weak areas
- Remediation options
- Focus on application-type of questions for candidates to demonstrate experience
- Updated candidate documentation and workshop
- Eligibility requirement (not in effect until March 2023): Completion of at least 85% of approved experience hours in each category as per the Internship in Architecture Program Manual – Fourth Edition (PDF)
- Category A: Design and Construction Documents
- Category B: Construction Administration
- Category C: Management
More information about the Oral Exam, including eligibility requirements and exam protocols, can be found in the new Oral Exam Candidate Guidebook. We encourage registrants to thoroughly review this new resource, as well as the Intern Architect section of the AIBC website.
