For many years, the AIBC recognized Architects and AIBC volunteers who made positive impacts on the profession of architecture or at the Institute through its Recognition Program. The Recognition Program featured the Professional Service Awards, which included: the Lifetime Achievement Award; Special Recognition Award; and the Barbara Dalrymple Memorial Award for Community Service. The Program also featured the Volunteer Service Awards, which included: the AIBC Award for Lifetime Volunteer Achievement; CEO Award for Exceptional Volunteer Service; and Council Service Recognition. Awards were usually presented at a by-invitation appreciation ceremony held annually in the fall. Given COVID-19 pandemic, the awards were not held in 2021 and 2022.
As the regulator for the profession of architecture in B.C., the AIBC has been transferring all advocacy activities, to focus solely on furthering the Institute’s regulatory public-interest mandate, and delivering regulatory services and operations. In 2021, the AIBC moved the Architectural Awards of Excellence to the advocacy organization for the architectural profession in British Columbia – the Architecture Foundation of BC (AFBC).
As of June 2023, the AIBC has officially transferred the Professional Service Awards to the AFBC.
The AIBC will continue to recognize the contributions of volunteers through a refreshed and updated Recognition Program, that only includes the Volunteer Service Awards. It is anticipated that an in-person ceremony will be held for all AIBC volunteers this fall. More information about the Program will be made available shortly on the website.
