In 2021, the AIBC modernized its data management system with a new Registrant database and Portal. As part of the launch, the AIBC assigned new unique administrative identifiers to each Registrant. This identifier has been referred to in many ways – such as the “R Number,” “Registrant Number,” or “AIBC Number”, as a few examples. To help clarify the administrative purpose and distinguish it from other Registrant numbers, the AIBC has renamed this identifier – going forward, it will be referred to as the “AIBC ID”.
What is an AIBC ID?
The AIBC ID is a unique identifier, issued to all Registrants, affiliates, firms and firm administrators. For individual Registrants, it is formatted with alphanumeric characters – a prefix of letters, followed by six unique numbers: AIBC-R######. It’s important to note that the AIBC ID is an administrative identifier, and is different and distinct from a licence number (licence numbers represent an architect’s registration with AIBC, and are used when applyingfor a digital seal and for registration in other Canadian jurisdictions.).
AIBC-R###### is used for the following purposes:
- Reporting Learning Units for Continuing Education System requirements
- Processing invoices and payments
- Other AIBC administrative matters
When inputting your AIBC ID, it is important to enter it in full, including all letters, the dash, and numbers. Common errors include only including the numbers, or what comes after the dash. It is crucial the full ID be reported, so that the AIBC can accurately allocate Learning Units, and process payments to the correct Registrant.

What about for Firm Registrants? Is it the Same AIBC ID?
AIBC IDs are also issued for Firm Registrants, which are different than the AIBC ID assigned to individual Registrants. For Firm Registrants, the AIBC ID is formatted slightly differently, with an “E” instead of an “R”:
AIBC-E###### is used for the following purposes:
- Processing invoices and payments for Firm Registrants
- Other Firm related administrative matters (e.g. identifying a firm when requesting a letter of good standing)
