New Volunteer Opportunity – BEA Assessors

April 30, 2025

The AIBC is seeking Architects interested in the Broadly Experienced Applicant (BEA) pathway to registration to serve as BEA Assessors. This newly created volunteer opportunity is part of the recently redesigned and modernized BEA assessment process. This is an ideal opportunity for individuals looking to deepen their understanding of assessment practices and current trends in architecture, while also contributing to the registration journey of new architects with alternative qualifications.

What is the BEA Program?

The BEA Program recognizes individuals who have not met the usual requirements for registration through education, experience, and examination. Through the BEA Program, the AIBC can assess for equivalency and register individuals who demonstrate they meet admission standards through alternative qualifications. The BEA program is unique to the AIBC as it primarily relies on demonstrable architectural experience.

Recently, the AIBC reviewed and updated the assessment process. The new BEA assessment is the most substantive update to the BEA program in the past decade. It further aligns the program with the Professional Governance Act, and the AIBC’s ongoing commitment to broadening access to registration for applicants from a wide array of backgrounds.

Become a BEA Assessor

BEA Assessors play a critical role in keeping the program effective, consistent, and fair. They participate in administering program requirements by reviewing  written assessments and supporting portfolios of architectural work experience; conducting oral assessments; and providing recommendations as to whether an applicant has met the requirements set out in the Canadian Standard of Competency for Architects and AIBC Bylaws.

Application intake cycles happen three times per year, and assessors can expect to commit around eight hours per cycle, with very flexible scheduling to accommodate personal availability. The AIBC provides comprehensive training, and assessors are eligible to receive modest recognition payments for the completion of assessments.

The assessor role is open to Architects with 3+ years of post registration experience, and new Retired Architects. Former BEA or BEFA applicants are strongly encouraged to apply. Experience volunteering at the AIBC, or acting as a supervisor or mentor for Intern Architects or BEFA candidates is an asset but is not essential.

Applicants should bring a curious, inquisitive mindset and empathetic approach; excellent communication skills, including the ability to work cooperatively with others and engage in effective, analytical discussion; and have an awareness of bias and the challenges it poses.

How to Apply

If you are interested in becoming a BEA Assessor, we encourage you to submit an application. To apply, please submit your completed Volunteer Application Form (PDF) and your most up-to-date resume to the People Operations department at volunteers@aibc.ca.

To learn more about the benefits of volunteering at the AIBC and see a full role description, please see our Volunteer Program page.
