2026 Certified Professional (CP) Course
The 2026 Certified Professional (CP) Course is based on the 2024 BC Building Code and the 2025 Vancouver Building By-law. The CP Course is conducted online, with the CP exams and site visit taking place in-person. Registration closes on December 1, 2025, or when all spots are filled. Early registration is advised, as capacity in both courses is usually reached well before the December deadline.
Partial grant funding for the courses is available through the WorkBC BC Employer Training Grant for those who are eligible. To learn more, visit the Government of BC’s Workforce Training Stream webpage.
Please note that while there are no specific prerequisites to register, these are advanced courses and having National Building Code, BC Building Code or Vancouver Building By-law knowledge is recommended. Contact CP Program Manager Anja Slusarzick-Seibt if you are uncertain about your readiness to take either course.
Certified Professional Program Overview
The CP Program is an alternative to the conventional building permit and inspection process adopted by Vancouver, Surrey, Abbotsford, Burnaby, West Vancouver, University Endowment Lands, Nanaimo, Ladysmith, District of Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh Nation, and Squamish Nation (Sen̓áḵw). Through the program, participating Authorities Having Jurisdiction can issue building permits on the assurances of a CP.
Although anyone may take the CP Course, only registered architects (Architects AIBC) and professional engineers (P.Eng.) may practice as CPs. Intern Architects AIBC, Engineers-in-Training (EITs), and other non-registered professionals who fulfill all CP Course requirements and successfully pass the CP Exams will become eligible to practice as CPs upon registration as architects or engineers.
2026 Certified Professional Course Schedule
The CP Course schedule consists of 12 full-day sessions on Wednesdays from January 14 to April 15, 2026. There are no classes on March 4, 2026 (reading break) and March 25, 2026 (spring break). There is an optional half-day tutorial on April 22, 2026. The CP Course concludes with 2 full-day exams April 29 and May 6, 2026. The site visits, mid-term and final exams will be conducted in-person in Greater Vancouver.

CP Course Policy
CP Course students must have a minimum of 80% live attendance, have submitted both the high-rise and low-rise projects and have written the mid-term exam prior to writing the Final CP Exam. Students who do not meet these requirements will not be allowed to write the Final CP Exam and will fail to complete the Certified Professional Course. Please note that viewing a course recording in place of attending a live course day, or a portion of a live course day, will be considered as not having attended.
CP Course Students are required to have their own hard copies of the BC Building Code (BCBC) and the Vancouver Building Bylaw (VBBL) for the purpose of writing the CP midterm and final exams. The BCBC and VBBL hard copies are not included in the course cost.
Recording Policy
Each day of the Certified Professional (CP) and Advanced Code Knowledge (ACK) courses will be recorded. The intended purpose of these recordings is to provide students who were absent during a course day, to view the content that was missed.
The recordings will be stored on AIBC’s internal network drive, which is only accessible to AIBC staff and AIBC’s IT representatives. They will be shared through Sync.com, which is a secure, private, end-to-end encrypted online cloud storage platform with Canadian compliance built-in, including Canadian data residency.
Only students who have missed a course day, or a portion of a course day, will be given access to the recording and will be required to delete the file seven (7) days after it has been shared. CP and ACK students are not permitted to share the recordings. The AIBC will store the recordings on the AIBC network for six (6) months after the CP and ACK courses complete.
By participating, you agree not to record any presentation using a personal device or external program.
Continuing Education Policy
This is an AIBC-Delivered event. Learning Units (LUs) are only recorded for AIBC CES Participants who have registered and paid for the event. No self-reports are accepted from individuals who have not registered and paid. LUs will be recorded on behalf of CES Participants and adjusted to reflect the actual time attended for each session.
