Presented by Urbanium for Smart Cities and Museum of Vancouver
Exhibit ends May 15, 2016!
Vancouver is undergoing massive change. It’s a city of newcomers, a construction site, and a magnet for global capital. Issues such as housing affordability and neighbourhood density are on everyone’s minds. How can we shape tomorrow’s city? Your Future Home: Creating the New Vancouver encourages Vancouverites and visitors to discover, discuss, and debate challenges and solutions and participate in the design of their communities. Within historical and contemporary contexts, this project invites Vancouverites to rediscover their city and recognize the forces shaping it.
The Vancouver Urbanarium Society and the Museum of Vancouver have jointly developed Your Future Home. This major exhibition is dedicated to fostering discussion about our shared future and inspiring people to think about the city in new ways.
The exhibition consists of three spaces:
- An introductory area presents the residential landscape of Vancouver through dozens of photographs as it invites people to contribute photographs and drawings. A mock 1400-sq.-ft. Presentation Centre focused on ‘selling’ the city of Vancouver introduces people to the surprising facts of life in contemporary Vancouver—before sending them into a 3400-sq.-ft. Future Grid that welcomes people to stroll among stories of urban turning points and visions of what the city might become.
- The Presentation Centre enables people to enjoy infographics, videos, and printed matter that present the surprising factual foundations of Vancouver – a city with fewer native residents than any place in North America. Two special features include a highly detailed projected animation of Vancouver, and a 3D printed model of Downtown Vancouver.
- The Future Grid is divided into four quadrants: affordability; density; mobility; public space. It features 23 visions of the future, developed by some of Vancouver’s most talented design visionaries. These future scenarios, design works in a variety of media, inspire people to talk about what might be—and what should never be. Also featured are eight case studies that demonstrate how Vancouverites have participated in creating today’s city.
The exhibition reveals Vancouver’s rich urban history as it enhances understanding and appreciation of the city.
