The following is an announcement from Technical Safety BC
Attention Elevating Contractors and Building Owners,
After review, Directive: Safety zone for elevating devices (D-L4 090722-2) has been rescinded.
Effective November 18, 2019, clearances at elevator entrances should be based on the requirements found in:
- National Building Code of Canada (NBCC), and
- BC Building Code (BCBC) accessibility handbook.
As a reminder, the safety zone of an elevating device assures there is adequate space for passengers to enter or exit the device. Any type of obstruction in front of elevator doors could be a serious hazard to riders. Licensed contractors, building owners and personnel working on equipment are responsible for ensuring elevator entrances remain clear and safe for riders.
