Volunteer Opportunities: Municipal Advisory Design Panels and AIBC Design Panel Committee

August 5, 2020

Are you an Architect AIBC who is looking to get more involved with your community? Do you want to help shape the projects and policies affecting the built environment? You may be interested in joining a municipal Advisory Design Panel (ADP).

The AIBC provides architect-member nominations to more than 25 ADPs in British Columbia and is looking for volunteers. Architects participating on ADPs are dedicated to advising local governments, municipalities and districts on design, urban planning and zoning matters, in order to help them arrive at the best decisions possible in the public interest. They provide valuable insight and feedback for projects, proposals and/or policies affecting a community’s physical environment.

Details about the meeting schedules of each ADP are available in the Design Panel Meeting Matrix. Information about how COVID-19 is impacting either the time or delivery of meetings will be found on each jurisdiction’s ADP webpage.

If you are interested in applying, please submit your CV and a completed Advisory Design Panel Application Form to designpanels@aibc.ca. Applications can be submitted anytime and remain valid for two years. Applicants whose two-year application period has expired are welcome and encouraged to submit a new application.

AIBC’s Design Panel Committee

The Institute also has an opportunity for Architects AIBC to volunteer on the AIBC’s Design Panel Committee as a municipal liaison.

The committee engages in valuable discussions on the importance of ADPs including how best to promote their appropriate function in the public interest. The committee reviews ADP applications and provides recommendations for nomination of candidates to ADPs across the province.

Meetings will resume in September and take place on the first Wednesday of each month from 12:15 – 2:15 p.m. More information about this volunteer opportunity is available on the AIBC website.

Interested candidates are invited to send a short statement of interest to volunteers@aibc.ca.
