AIBC Supported Sessions at BUILDEX Vancouver

Session: Evaluating Current and Emerging Mechanical Design Strategies for Multi-Unit Residential Buildings
Date:
Wednesday, March 23
Time: 1:15 – 2:15 p.m.
Presenters: Marc Trudeau Architect AIBC, P.Eng., BEMP, CPHD, LEED AP BD+C; Marie-France Venneri P.Eng., LEED AP; Patrick Stewart P.Eng., CPHD, LEED GA

In residential building design, there are tradeoffs in identifying a system that can concurrently provide excellent thermal comfort and air quality, has small environmental impact, and is affordable. Multi-unit residential HVAC options have expanded significantly from traditional boilers and chillers to include many variations of heat-pump systems (centralized and distributed) that move energy using water and refrigerant. This session will discuss current and emerging system options, how they work conceptually, the architectural implications, costs, resiliency, performance (in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and energy), and the relationship to increasingly stringent cooling and greenhouse gas targets in future building code policy.

Session: Structural Fire Engineering: Understanding Fire Resistance & Risk
Date: Thursday, March 24, 2022
Time: 2:45 – 3:45 p.m.
Presenter: Kieran Ager, Senior Fire Engineer, LMDG Building Code Consultants Ltd

This presentation will explore the challenges of utilizing exposed mass timber within modern design. The presenter will unpack the myths and legend surrounding fire resistance and the link to combustible construction within the Building Code.

The presentation outlines methods to rationalize the application of fire resistance utilizing risk informed performance-based design as well as the use of combustible construction beyond prescriptive limitations. Ultimately a roadmap is outlined that both rationalizes fire resistance performance and facilitates the use of combustible construction to reflect modern construction methods and materials within the evolving built environment.
