The 2023 AIBC Induction and Retirement Ceremony – an event which recognizes new Architects AIBC and Architectural Technologists AIBC, as well as Retired Architects AIBC – took place on September 14, 2023. This was the first Induction Retirement Ceremony that the AIBC held in-person since 2019, with the last ceremony taking place virtually in 2021.
The AIBC was delighted to be able to recognize all of the achievements of inductees and retirees in-person this year. Nearly 200 individuals were in attendance, including inductees, retirees, and their guests.
The 2023 Ceremony began with the procession of the inductees. The emcee for the evening was Mary McMains Architect AIBC, member of the Credentials Committee. Following her opening remarks, AIBC Board Chair Marguerite Laquinte Francis Architect AIBC addressed retirees and inductees, extending the Board’s best wishes and hearty congratulations. Marguerite Laquinte Francis also lead the new Architects AIBC though a recitation of the Architect’s Declaration.
Since the 2021 virtual ceremony, the AIBC has had nearly 350 individuals approved for registration. Of these Registrants, close to 50% registered through the Internship in Architecture Program, and more than 150 obtained registration through reciprocal registration agreements with other provinces or states.
As per tradition, a recently retired architect presents a Charge to inductees. This year, Norman Hotson Retired Architect AIBC led the address:
“As architects, it is your responsibility to deliver the best possible outcome, not only for your clients, but for the community at large. Buildings should not be seen in isolation, as the singular union of art and science. Buildings are an integral piece of their context and should be designed to enliven and add value to their surroundings.
My charge to you is to develop an expertise within your practice, maintain the highest level of quality in your work, show leadership in the profession, remain confident in how you perform your services, put people first, and listen.”

Newly registered Architect AIBC Heba Maleki provided the Response:
“It has been a journey for all of us to get here, one filled with highs and lows, laughter and tears, passion and sleepless nights, connection and quarantine, but one mostly of immense opportunity for learning and growth, both professionally and personally.
The future is literally being shaped by our hands. I urge you to dream big, be curious, and to challenge – challenge your clients and municipalities to push boundaries; challenge one another by asking questions, listening and collaborating; and most importantly challenge yourself to stay curious, passionate, strive for the highest quality and to lean into the discomfort of growth in leadership.”
