Thank you for Attending Conference 2024: Act

May 1, 2024

The Architectural Institute of British Columbia was pleased to host more than 450 Architects, Architectural Technologists, Intern Architects, Retired Architects, and other professionals at the 2024 AIBC Conference from April 22–24. Attendees from across B.C. and beyond explored the many interpretations of this year’s theme: Act. The AIBC was delighted to be back in-person at the Vancouver Convention Centre West after several years, while also offering virtual programming as part of the first day of Conference, with four online-only sessions taking place on Monday.

With more than 25 speaking events covering a wide range of topics, delegates were able to attend sessions, panel discussions, and evening gatherings, including the movie night presentation of the documentary From Earth to Sky. The screening included a special post-film discussion with director Ron Chapman and several architects: Sim’oogit Saa-Bax̠ / Patrick Stewart, Alfred Waugh, and Tamarah Begay.

Highlights from the Conference included the opening keynote presentation ‘Indigenous Values Through Design’ by Tamarah Begay, Founder of Indigenous Design Studio + Architecture; the plenary presentation from Sxwíxwtn Wilson Williams, Graeme Silvera, and Venelin Kokalov on the Sen̓áḵw development; and the closing keynote ‘Context is Everything’, delivered by Alison Brooks.

In addition to the sessions, plenary presentation, and keynotes, there were also two student exhibits at the conference from BCIT and UBC SALA. Attendees also had an opportunity to participate in the interactive activity “How can the architectural community in B.C. take action?”. Over the course of the event, participants shared their ideas, and an illustration was created live, on-site, to capture all of the responses:

If you attended AIBC Conference 2024, we encourage you to complete the Conference Survey. Attendees are also reminded not to self-report the event as Learning Units will be entered by the AIBC.

We look forward to seeing you next year virtually at PD Day 2025, and back in-person at AIBC Conference 2026!
