For many years, the AIBC Architectural Walking Tours guided locals and visitors alike through Vancouver and Victoria neighbourhoods. Over its more than 20-year history, there have been different iterations of the walking tours, including walking tours in Nelson and Penticton, and special cycling and boat tours editions. Throughout all its iterations, participants learned architectural insights about buildings and landmarks, about the role the AIBC has in the architectural community, and about the history of the neighbourhoods and those who lived there.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the tours were unable to be held and a comprehensive review was undertaken to assess the future of the program, including the AIBC’s role in delivering them.
After review, the AIBC is pleased to share that as of June 2024, the Architectural Walking Tour Program has been fully transferred to the Architecture Foundation of British Columbia (AFBC), who will continue the legacy of the Program, with a new, refreshed vision. The Architecture Foundation of BC is a non-profit organization that advocates for the advancement of architecture and design in British Columbia.
The AFBC anticipates that architectural walking tours will be taking place summer 2024 and if you would like to be notified when the tours become available, please email tours@architecturefoundationbc.ca. More information from the AFBC about its plans for the architectural walking tours will be available soon on their website and social medial channels.
This transition is in alignment with the AIBC’s continued efforts to transfer all advocacy activities, in order to focus on advancing the Institute’s regulatory public-interest mandate. The AIBC thanks all participants who have joined us for the program over the past 20+ years, and looks forward to the next chapter of the walking tours under the Architecture Foundation of BC.
