Registration for the BC Building Code – Adaptable Dwelling Units Course is now open. The course will take place virtually on Wednesday, September 11, 2024. Presented in partnership with Building Safety Standards Branch, this session will review the upcoming changes to Subsection 3.8.5. of the BC Building Code 2024, to be implemented March 10, 2025, requiring ‘adaptable dwelling units’ in new housing.
Adaptable dwelling units are not fully accessible units, and are defined as “a dwelling unit designed and constructed with some accessible features, and which accommodates the future modification to provide more accessible features.” These new requirements will apply to almost all dwelling units in new buildings. This course will focus on the rationale for these code requirements, and design strategies for meeting them.
More information on adaptable dwellings units is available through the Building and Safety Standards Branch website, including an information bulletin on the transition period (B24-01) and a Frequently Asked Questions Bulletin (B24-09-R2). BOABC also has a number of interpretations available on their BC Building and Plumbing Code Interpretations website for 2024: boabc.org/building-and-plumbing-code-interpretations-2024/.
A full description of the Adaptable Dwelling Units Course, including presenter bios, can be found on the Professional Development Opportunities webpage.
