Proposed Amendments to the AIBC Bylaws and Professional Standards

February 11, 2026

The AIBC continues its review and modernization of both the AIBC Bylaws and the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct (Code of Ethics) that is found in the bylaws. This is a notification for Registrants and the public about proposed amendments to the AIBC Bylaws, including improvements to Professional Standards. The proposed amendments have received approval in principle from the AIBC Board and are under review by the Office of the Superintendent of Professional Governance (OSPG).

Registrants are reminded that under the Professional Governance Act (PGA), the Board is authorized to amend the AIBC Bylaws and the Code of Ethics, for delivery to the OSPG for final decision and filing by the Minister.

Proposed Bylaw Amendments

The proposed amendments to the bylaws are primarily administrative in nature. To see the proposed changes with accompanying rationale, please refer to the AIBC Bylaw Amendment Chart.

A summary of the proposed changes can be found below:

  • Current Bylaw 2.48 establishes the Board election cycle. The proposed amendment allows the 2026 election to proceed with four vacancies, rather than the current three.
  • Current Bylaw 8.32 establishes the publication requirements for illegal practice resolutions. The proposed amendment aligns the bylaw language with sections 53 and 54 of the PGA.
  • Schedule I: Mutual Recognition Agreements for Registration is authorized by Bylaw 4.17 and sets out the eligibility and registration requirements for registration as an Architect through Mutual Recognition Agreements. The proposed amendments include:
    • the addition of the Canada / European Union Mutual Recognition Agreement;
    • the addition of the Canada / United Kingdom Mutual Recognition Agreement;
    • updates to the Canada / United States Reciprocity Agreement; and
    • updates to the Tri-National Mutual Recognition Agreement.

Proposed Updates to Professional Standards in the Code of Ethics

The Professional Standards Advisory Group is recommending updates to the following Professional Standards in the Code of Ethics, which are relatively minor in nature:

  • Professional Standard 2.1 (client confidentiality): Proposed amendments to commentary only to include a reminder to maintain confidentiality of client information throughout bidding processes and also when using social media.
  • Professional Standard 6.2 (supervision of services at a site or branch office): Proposed deletion/repeal of the standard as it is outdated and reflects a time when working remotely was not commonplace.
  • Professional Standard 6.1 (Direct Supervision of non-Architects): Proposed update to commentary only to import and retain the guidance from repealed Professional Standard 6.2 (above), which is still generally applicable.
  • Professional Standard 6.4 (formal presentations to an authority): Proposed amendment to clarify that when an architectural project is being advanced in public by an Architectural Firm, an Architect must be present.
  • Professional Standard 8.5 (use of electronic Seal): Proposed amendment to commentary only to reflect the corporate name change of the AIBC’s digital seal provider from “Notarius” to “Portage CyberTech”.

The AIBC Board invites and encourages your participation in the consultation process for the proposed amendments to the AIBC Bylaws and updated Professional Standards.

The deadline to submit feedback and comments is March 31, 2026. All feedback received will be considered by the Professional Standards Advisory Group, the AIBC Board, and AIBC staff.

The amendments and any feedback received will be presented to the AIBC Board in April for final approval. If approved, the Bylaws will be filed with the OSPG. Once in effect, Registrants and the public will be notified.
