May 6 and 7 2019 were eventful days for the AIBC, with the 100th AIBC Annual Meeting taking place, as well as the kick-off of the Institute’s centenary with a celebratory reception. Immediately following these events, the inaugural AIBC Confab took place. All events were hosted at the Vancouver Convention Center West.
AIBC 100th Annual Meeting
Attendees were welcomed to the 100th Annual Meeting at 3:30 p.m. on May 6. Participants heard from council about the past year, including reports from: Danica Djurkovic Architects AIBC, AIBC Council President; Mark Vernon, CEO of the AIBC; Gordon Richards Architect AIBC, Registrar; and Sean Ruthen Architect AIBC, Treasurer. Highlights included the Honorary Member Nominations, whereby two individuals, Susan Morris and James Starck, were conferred honorary membership by a vote amongst eligible AIBC registrants in attendance. In addition, the 2019/2020 AIBC Council Election results were announced, and a Member Motion from the floor was put forward in regard to Letters of Assurance between members sharing the same Certificate of Practice. The Motion is now with AIBC Council for review – an update will be shared with registrants in due course.
Centenary Reception

Following the 100th Annual Meeting, the AIBC hosted a reception to kick-off the Institute’s centenary year. Attendees had to opportunity to hear from a number of inspiring speakers, including: Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, the Honourable Janet Austin, OBC; Council President Danica Djurkovic Architect AIBC, dedicated AIBC volunteer Robyn Fenton Architect AIBC; and AIBC Scholarship recipient and UBC student Sarah Klym.
Confab 2019: the art of conversation
More than 300 Architects AIBC, associates, staff and stakeholders attended the first-ever AIBC Confab, which took place the following day on May 7. This streamlined, one-day event focused on professional development and a shared learning experience. The theme for the event was: “the art of conversation.”

Over the course of the day delegates participated in sessions, including an interactive workshop, which explored a wide range topics. The format consisted of four streams, with each session intending to stimulate dialogue and engage individuals in all different stages of their careers.
