Updated AIBC Statement Regarding COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

March 13, 2020

NOTE: As March 17, 2020, the AIBC Conference has been cancelled. Please refer to aibc.ca/COVID-19 for the most up-to-date information.

Originally posted March 13, 2020 at 3:04 p.m.

The health, safety and well-being of registrants and staff is a priority for the Institute. We recognize that the COVID-19 situation is evolving rapidly, and we are committed to keeping those impacted informed.

Yesterday at 7 p.m., the provincial government directed that mass gatherings of over 250 people be cancelled. The Vancouver Convention Centre, the venue where the 2020 AIBC Conference is set to take place, is currently working with their clients who have events scheduled over the next 30 days. Since the Conference is scheduled outside the 30-day window, the AIBC is continuing to closely monitor the situation, as well as work with and take guidance from the appropriate agencies and governmental authorities.

In the event the 2020 AIBC Conference is cancelled, full refunds will be given to those who have purchased a conference package. The AIBC will automatically send refunds via the original payment method. In addition, there will be no administrative fee or penalty for those who choose to cancel their conference registration at this time – please submit your cancellation request to conference@aibc.ca.

If conference is cancelled, the 101st AIBC Annual Meeting will be postponed to a later date in 2020, in compliance with Section 21 of the Architects Act. The upcoming AIBC Council Election remains unchanged.

The AIBC is aware that many registrants attend conference to meet their Continuing Education System (CES) requirements, and that the upcoming reporting period deadline is June 30, 2020. The Institute is reviewing the current CES situation and assessing appropriate action. An update will be provided shortly.

At present there are no disruptions to other AIBC services for the public or registrants. We are committed to providing a safe environment at the Institute and are taking the necessary precautions, such as having enhanced cleaning and sanitization procedures after-hours, asking visitors to wash their hands with soap and water upon arrival, switching to individually wrapped food for lunches versus buffet style, and so forth. If you are visiting the Institute, please practice proper hygiene etiquette to help contribute to a healthy shared space by frequently washing your hands, covering your mouth and nose with flexed elbow or tissue when coughing or sneezing, and avoid touching your face. As a reminder, if you feel ill or are exhibiting any symptoms, please stay at home and follow the recommended health protocol. The AIBC will take the necessary action, including reimbursement without penalty, to accommodate those who are unable to attend AIBC courses.

The AIBC is committed to keeping registrants informed about the evolving COVID-19 situation as it relates to the Institute’s programs, services and initiatives. We will continue to provide frequent updates as information becomes available via our website and email. If you have any questions or concerns, please email reception@aibc.ca.
