Two sessions remaining for the Summer 2023 PD Series

August 2, 2023

There are only two sessions remaining for the Summer 2023 PD Series!

“Collaborating with Kengo Kuma & Associates Architects on the Alberni Project: an Executive Architect’s Perspective from Conception to Completion” is taking place on August 16, and “Design Guideline Solutions: Local Prefab Mass Timber” will be held on August 23. Those who attend both August sessions will have the opportunity to earn three Core Learning Units. The series is a convenient way to earn LUs, as all sessions are held online via Zoom from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Session descriptions and registration details for all of the sessions can be found below. For more information, please visit the AIBC Professional Development webpage.

2023 Summer PD Series Schedule – August

August 16 | Collaborating with Kengo Kuma & Associates Architects on the Alberni Project:  an Executive Architect’s Perspective from Conception to Completion
Register by August 14 | COST: $60
Merrick Architecture will detail their successful collaboration as Local Collaborating Architect with Kengo Kuma as Temporary Licensee (Architect) in realizing the 1568 Alberni project, covering the collaboration between the two parties and giving the background and execution of some of the detailing of this iconic building.

Presenters: Louise Webb Architect AIBC, ARB, Dip. Arch., Principal, Merrick Architecture – Borowski Sakumoto McIntyre Webb Ltd. and Mark Zaitsoff Architect AIBC, LEED® AP, MRAIC, M.Arch, Managing Associate, Merrick Architecture – Borowski Sakumoto McIntyre Webb Ltd.

August 23 | Design Guideline Solutions: Local Prefab Mass Timber

Register by August 21 | COST: $60
Mass timber is part of an emerging worldwide construction shift towards offsite construction with low embodied carbon materials and is expected to be a significant share of future construction in B.C. Prefabricated buildings made from sustainably sourced timber can generate a triple win of low-carbon buildings, secure jobs in small and big towns and a sustainable forest products sector that gets more value with less fibre. In this workshop, attendees will learn about the release of Renewable Cities’ new guide, Building Capacity, that helps solve the biggest local barriers, specifically zoning bylaws, design guideline and building permitting processes. The presentation will focus on design guideline solutions that take into account the design characteristics and construction efficiencies associated with prefab mass timber materials.

Presenters: Brad Doff, Senior Program Manager, Renewable Cities, ENV SP, LEED Green Associate; Thomas Noussis, Intern Architect AIBC, Associate, ZGF Architects; Gary Penway, Principal, Gary Penway Consulting, RPP, MCIP; Helen Goodland Architect RIBA, Principal, Head of Research & Innovation, Scius Advisory Services; and  Norm Couttie Architect AIBC, President, Ecosse Development Corp.
