BCBC 2024: Adaptable Dwelling Units Transition Period Resources

June 3, 2024

The 2024 BC Building Code came into effect on March 8, 2024, except for adaptable dwellings and earthquake design changes, which come into effect on March 10, 2025.

Providing industry a reasonable transition period to implement the new requirements helps minimize construction delays and cost increases for in-stream projects. During the transition period, training and education on the new requirements builds knowledge and capacity before the new requirements come into force.

The government has issued a Bulletin and an FAQ document on adaptable dwelling units:

  • B24-01: Transition period for adaptable dwellings in the British Columbia Building Code 2024
  • B24-09-R: Adaptable Dwelling Units Frequently Asked Questions

The AIBC will also be hosting a session on September 11 that focuses on the adaptable dwelling unit design requirements, presented by Andy Chase of the Building and  Safety Standards Branch and Ron Bijok Architect AIBC CP. Registration will be opening shortly on the AIBC website.
