Role of the AIBC Board
The Board governs the affairs of the AIBC. The Board’s focus is on providing leadership, regulatory direction, and good policy governance in compliance with the Professional Governance Act, the PGA Regulations, AIBC Bylaws and the Board’s own policies.
The Board governs by:
- Representing the best interests of the public, as well as being accountable to the public, Registrants, and appropriate legal bodies for its performance.
- Establishing professional and organizational standards by:
- approving Bylaws, including those related to the requirements for entrance into the profession, professional competence and practice, complaints, investigations, and discipline, as well as those related to Institute governance.
- approving the Professional Standards found in the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.
- setting policies in relation to the governance and operations of the Board, and expectations and limitations related to organizational performance, and the relationship between the Board and the CEO.
- Ensuring the viability of the organization, by:
- setting the vision, values, and strategic priorities through a Strategic Plan.
- maintaining broad oversight and holding the CEO accountable for the management, administration, and operations of AIBC program areas.
- ensuring financial health and stability by approving and monitoring an annual budget, as well as approving the annual auditing process.
- planning for the succession and diversity of the Board and ensuring that Board Members have the appropriate competencies for fulfilling their roles and responsibilities.
Board Composition
Under the Professional Governance Act, the AIBC Board is comprised of seven elected Registrant Board Members, four appointed Lay (public) Board Members, and a non-voting Immediate Past Board Chair.
The Board election cycle is as follows, per AIBC Bylaw 2.48:
- In 2023 and every three years thereafter, an election for three Registrant Board Member positions;
- In 2024 and every three years thereafter, an election for four Registrant Board Member positions; and
- In 2025 and every three years thereafter, no Board election will be held.
Those elected will take office immediately following the Annual General Meeting. Registrant Board Member terms are three years.
