Code of Ethics and Bylaw Archive

Since the AIBC’s transition to the Professional Governance Act in February 2023, the AIBC continues to refine the updated AIBC Bylaws and Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct. The following is a list of completed Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct amendments since February 2023.

Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct Review Archive

  • Project Takeover – 2024
    The amendments to the Project Takeover Professional Standards were approved by the AIBC Board in April 2024, and the Superintendent declared the updated AIBC Bylaws and Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct in force, effective May 1, 2024. This suite of Professional Standards specifies the requirements a Registrant must follow when taking over a Project for which another Registrant is or has been retained. The amendments to these standards were made to align with modern professional regulation practices. Read more.

Bylaw Review Archive under Architects Act (2012–2020)

For reference purposes only, the below is an archive of amended bylaws completed under the Architects Act, from 2012 to 2020. More information about the bylaw review process over this time period can be found on the AIBC website.

Bylaw Review Archive: 2017–2020

Code of Ethics Part II– 2020
The Code of Ethics & Administrative Bylaws were approved by members in February 2021, and came into effect late March 2021. The bylaws were organized into several categories: Advertising (‘Promotional Activities”), General Professional Conduct including Harassment and Discrimination, Supervision of Intern Architect, Client Confidentiality, Election Procedures and Voting, and Professional Engagement and Client Communication (deferred to Code of Ethics – Part 3). Read more.

Code of Ethics & Administrative Bylaws – 2019
The Code of Ethics & Administrative Bylaws were approved by members in August 2019, and came into effect early October 2019. The bylaws were organized into three categories: Code of Ethics – Part 1; Investigation and Discipline; and Honorary Membership. Read more.

Council and Institute Governance – 2018
The Council and Institute Governance were approved by members in December 2018, and came into effect early February 2019. The bylaws were organized into five categories: Seal of the Institute; Officers and Council; Boards, Task Forces and Committees; Remuneration and Expenses; and Nominations and Elections. Read more.

Administrative Bylaws – 2018 
The Administrative Bylaws 2018 were approved by members in June 2018, and came into effect early August 2018. The suite was organized into four topic areas: Firms; Admission/Registration; Fees and Fines; and Chapters. Read more.

Professional Liability Insurance – 2017 
The Professional Liability Insurance Bylaws were approved by members in July 2017. The thrust of the bylaws is the introduction of mandatory PLI for certificate of practice holders (i.e., architectural firms). They came into effect in August 2017, with compliance not required until February 1, 2019. Read more.

Suite of Associate Amendments – 2017
Bylaws related to AIBC associates were approved by members in November 2016, and came into effect early January 2017. A suite of four bylaws require council to establish qualifications for admission and designations for every associate class. Read more.

Bylaw Review Archive: 2012–2006

Investigations and Discipline Amendments – 2016
This initiative began in the fall of 2015. The bylaws were approved by members in July 2016 and came into effect in August. Investigations and discipline bylaws (37.0 through 37.42) were elevated from rules to bylaw status and a non-disciplinary option for resolution of certain complaints, known as “remedial recommendation”, was established. Read more.

Administrative Bylaw Amendments – 2016 
In the fall of 2015, three administrative bylaws regarding the CEO title, annual meeting quorum and the Code of Ethics were advanced by AIBC Council and supported by eligible voting registrants. They came into effect early January 2016. Read more.

Administrative Bylaw Amendments – 2015 
In the spring of 2015, three administrative bylaws put to electronic vote were supported by members. This was the AIBC’s first foray into electronic voting. These bylaws were chosen because they were in a state of readiness (two were discussed at the 2012 annual meeting) and considered non-controversial. Read more.

Electronic Voting for Council Elections and Bylaw Amendments – 2014
In 2014, the BRC made recommendations to council about bylaws that would allow the Institute’s members to vote ‘electronically’ for council elections and for bylaw changes themselves. The bylaws were approved by AIBC members at the May 3, 2014 annual meeting. Read more.

Consensual Resolution – 2013
In 2012-2013, the BRC focused on developing a suite of bylaws to establish the policies and procedures for consensual resolution of disciplinary matters.  Those bylaws were approved by AIBC members in May 2013. Read more.

Suite of Bylaw Amendments – 2012 
The Bylaw Review Committee (BRC) recommended to council a batch of bylaw amendments which were brought to the membership at the 2012 annual meeting.  Among those approved was the bylaw replacing MAIBC with “Architect AIBC” as the title reserved for BC-registered architects.
