Become an Architectural Technologist AIBC

Registration requires you to have an acceptable combination of education and related experience. There are three categories under which you can qualify:

  • Category 1
    Education:
Graduation from an AIBC-approved two-year technology diploma program (such as the BCIT Architectural and Building Engineering Technology Diploma Program) or equivalent.
Experience: Two years of related work experience, at least one year of which must be under the direct supervision of an Architect AIBC.
  • Category 2
Education: Graduation from an AIBC-approved one-year certificate program or equivalent.
Experience: Five years of related work experience, at least three years of which must be under the direct supervision of an Architect AIBC.
  • Category 3
    Education: No AIBC-approved education necessary.
Experience: Seven years of related work experience under the direct supervision of an Architect AIBC.

2. Apply for architectural technologist affiliate status and submit documentation

Upon meeting the education and experience requirements, an optional but highly recommended next step is to apply as an architectural technologist affiliate. See Affiliates section for more information.

Once signed up as an affiliate, you are invited to submit proof of your educational and related experience for review by the AIBC. The Institute will determine your eligibility category and advise you on whether further education or experience is required.

Note: this step is optional but highly recommended.

3. Complete the Professional Practice Standards & Ethics course (previously Ethics, Act & Bylaws)

Learn more about the Professional Practice Standards & Ethics course. The course is offered at a discounted rate for architectural technologist affiliates.
