Good Standing

Good Standing has a broader definition under the Professional Governance Act than it had under the now repealed Architects Act, which is consistent with professional regulatory expectations. The AIBC Bylaws (PDF) define “Good Standing” as the state of registration of any Registrant in which all of the following conditions apply:

  1. The Registrant is not suspended or under a restriction, term, condition, or limitation of practice that specifically removes the Registrant from Good Standing;
  1. The Registrant is compliant with all Continuing Education System requirements by the Final CES Deadline;
  1. The Registrant is compliant with all applicable Audit and Practice Review requirements;
  1. If a Firm Registrant, is in compliance with all Certificate of Practice, professional liability insurance, Firm Continuing Education, and Firm Update requirements; and
  1. The Registrant has no Fees or Costs owing to the AIBC that are past due.

Why Good Standing Is Important

Good Standing status is required for certain regulatory activities and registration processes, such as voluntary resignation or Firm closure. The chart below outlines several activities that can only be completed if the registration of a Registrant is in Good Standing. Please note it is not exhaustive of all activities that require Good Standing status:

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are several frequently asked questions regarding Good Standing status:

Is Good Standing published on the AIBC register?

Good Standing status is not currently displayed on the AIBC Register.

Good Standing status is closely monitored by AIBC staff as it is dynamic and has significant consequences which impact a Registrant’s eligibility to avail certain rights and processes, as outlined in the AIBC Bylaws.

How do I know if my registration is not in Good Standing? How do I return my registration to Good Standing status?

Registrants are encouraged to review and be familiar with the Good Standing definition, which can be found in the AIBC Bylaws.

The AIBC advises Registrants, in writing, if their registration is deemed not in Good Standing, including reasons for the status. Once Registrants have addressed the reasons and rectified any deficiencies, their Good Standing status will be restored.

Will I be able to renew my registration if my registration is Not in Good Standing?

A Registrant is not able to renew their registration if they have any outstanding AIBC Fees on March 2. Having overdue Fees is one of the reasons for a registration status to be not in Good Standing.

An example of the above situation is as follows:

Registrant X has an AIBC invoice amount of $100.00 with a due date of August 25. On August 26, Registrant X has not paid the Fee and their registration status is rendered not in Good Standing.  If Registrant X fails to pay this Fee before March 2, the following calendar year, their registration will be cancelled by the Registrar as per AIBC Bylaw 4.66, even if they paid the annual Fee for that year.
